In May 2016, the DRA identified the potential conflict between the OCP priority “Extend the Government Street Mall north to Pembroke Street “ and the cycling infrastructure proposed for Government Street North. Proposed designs for cycling infrastructure on Government Street South (between Humboldt and Yates) were abandoned early in the planning stage with the acknowledgement that the hardscape design (curbing) required to create protected bike lanes were incompatible within the Pedestrian Mall as it is designated pedestrian priority area. The DRA has reiterated the importance of the extension of the Government Street Mall as a key public amenity priority for Downtown residents (along with green space and the Harbour Walkway) for many years.
